A lot of people think of peatlands as empty or forgotten places, but they are actually some of the hardest working landscapes we have.
Here at Inishowen Rivers Trust, we’ve been involved in peatland restoration work across Inishowen over the past few years, helping to restore areas that were damaged or drained in the past. Simple actions like slowing the flow of water and rewetting peatlands can make a huge difference over time.
Healthy peatlands help store carbon, improve water quality, reduce erosion and flooding, and create important habitats for wildlife. They also play a really important role in keeping our rivers healthy downstream.
One of the best things about this work is seeing how quickly nature can begin to recover when given the chance.
There is still a long way to go, but days like today are a good reminder of why protecting and restoring peatlands matters so much for nature, climate, water and future generations.
