Exploring the Web of Life at Trawbregga Bay

As part of Heritage Week 2025, the Inishowen Rivers Trust hosted another memorable event – Exploring the Web of Life with ecologist Aengus Kennedy of NatureNorthWest. This was the fourth event in our Green Guardians biodiversity training series, a programme designed to help people connect with nature and learn practical ways to protect it.

The evening began indoors with a presentation from Aengus on biodiversity and nature-based solutions. He explained how everything in nature is interconnected, and how small actions can help support healthy ecosystems. Using specimens such as birds and mammals, he brought the science to life in a way that was accessible and engaging for everyone.

We then moved outdoors to the shoreline and sand dunes of Trawbregga Bay. With the tide receding, the group explored the different habitats of the bay, discovering more about the plants, animals, and birds that call this special place home. From the smallest shellfish to the larger wading birds, Aengus helped us see how each species plays its part in the wider web of life.

What made the evening especially enjoyable was the atmosphere of connection – both with nature and with one another. It was lovely to see familiar faces return to join us again, and equally wonderful to welcome new participants who were experiencing one of our events for the first time.

Events like this highlight the unique natural heritage of Inishowen and remind us why it is so important to celebrate, share, and protect it. By learning together and spending time in these beautiful landscapes, we build not only knowledge but also a stronger sense of community and care for the environment.

The Inishowen Rivers Trust would like to thank Aengus Kennedy for leading such an insightful and inspiring evening, and to everyone who joined us at Trawbregga Bay to make the event such a success.
