Last Saturday’s brash collection was one of those days that really shows what a great community we have here in Inishowen. Everyone who came along gave their time, energy and good humor, and together we got a huge amount of work done.
At Inishowen rivers Trust, brash collection days are an important part of how we look after local sites and waterways.
Brash which is the cut branches and small timber, is a really useful natural material for river work. When it is used in a revetment, it helps protect vulnerable riverbanks from erosion, slows the flow of water along the edge of the bank and supports more natural bank recovery. Over time, this kind of soft, nature-based work can help create more stable riverbanks and better habitat along the river corridor.

By collecting and storing brash now, we are preparing in advance for river restoration work later in the year. It means we will have the right material ready when the time comes, rather than having to source it at short notice.
Last Saturday’s collection was all about that future project. A good amount of brash was gathered on the day and it will be taken away and stored safely, ready to be used in the river revetment later this year.

A big thank you to everyone who came along to help. Your time and hard work are directly supporting hands-on river restoration in Inishowen, and helping us get ready for an important piece of work on the ground in the months ahead.
