Hands-On Learning at Butterlope Farm – Lantra Environmental Stewardship Course
On Saturday, Liz Doherty from Inishowen Rivers Trust joined participants at Butterlope Farm in Plumbridge, Co. Tyrone for the second session of RAPID’s Lantra Environmental Stewardship course.

Set in the beautiful Glenelly Valley, Butterlope Farm offered the perfect location for a hands-on, immersive learning experience. The day focused on environmental awareness and practical conservation skills, including hedgerow identification, native tree species, and kick sampling techniques for river monitoring.

Liz and fellow participants had the opportunity to explore local hedgerows, learning about plants and their place in the ecosystem, and how these practices can support biodiversity. From recognising the value of trees and plants in hedgerows to examining the health of waterways through kick sampling, the course offered a mix of theory, practice and peer learning.
This training is part of a cross-border initiative delivered by RAPID (Rural Area Partnership in Derry) in partnership with Inishowen Development Partnership, and funded through the Shared Island Civic Society Fund administered by the Department of the Taoiseach.
We’re proud to be involved in this collaboration, which not only builds capacity among community and environmental groups but also strengthens cross-border connections through shared learning and stewardship of our natural environment.
Thank you to the team at Butterlope Farm for their warm welcome and expertly delivered session.
