The Green Guardians Biodiversity Training Programme is a new initiative from Inishowen Rivers Trust, designed to help people learn more about biodiversity, what it is, why it matters, and how we can all play a part in protecting it.
Building on the success of our River Guardians programme, which focused on rivers and water protection, this new training takes a broader look at nature. Participants will explore a wide range of ecosystems, from insects and birds to plants, microbes, and sea mammals. The aim is to give people practical knowledge and skills they can use in their gardens, communities, or local landscapes.
As part of the program we will be introducing participants to the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s citizen science portal. We’ll show how to record wildlife sightings and contribute to a national effort to better understand and protect Ireland’s biodiversity. Participants will receive guidance during the sessions and a step-by-step “How To” guide will be emailed to all participants to help them use the portal confidently at home.
Whether you’re just getting started or already involved in nature projects, Green Guardians is a great way to learn more, get involved, and make a real difference.
To reserve your place on any of the events please book through Eventbrite.
In this course, you will learn about the following:

- The main threats to biodiversity – explore what’s putting nature at risk, from pollution to habitat loss.
- The interconnectedness of ecosystems – learn how plants, animals, soils, and water all work together.
- Practical ways to support biodiversity – discover simple steps you can take in your home, garden, or community.
- How to observe and record wildlife – learn how to identify species and take part in local and national biodiversity surveys.
- How to use the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s citizen science portal – get hands-on experience contributing to Ireland’s nature records.
- The role of peat soils in climate resilience – understand why peatlands are so important for storing carbon and protecting against climate change.

Welcome to the Green Guardians Biodiversity Training: Healthy Soil, Clean Waters!
Join us at Clonmany Community Gardens (behind the Clonmany Day Center – F93 N5DV) on Saturday 19th July, 2025 at 10:00 AM for an engaging workshop with KPM Soils, led by Kevin and Claire Moore. This hands-on session explores how we can assess soil for its function and health using a variety of different techniques and tools including microscopy.
Healthy soil does more than grow plants. It also filters and stores water, reduces runoff and pollution and plays a vital role in protecting local water quality. By improving soil health, we safeguard the streams, rivers and coastal waters our communities depend on.
Learn how to care for the soil, support microbial biodiversity and help ensure clean water for all. This is a great chance to connect with others who share your passion for nature and habitat regeneration. We look forward to seeing you there!

Insect Heroes, Nature’s Tiny Titans

Facilitator: Boomtree Bees, Michiel (Mick) Verspuij
Boomtree Bees is run by Michiel (Mick) Verspuij, a forester and natural beekeeper based in Donegal. With a background in forestry and organic farming, Mick focuses on supporting wild Irish honeybees through low-intervention methods and the use of natural log hives. His work promotes biodiversity by creating healthy habitats for pollinators and raising awareness through community workshops, school visits, and research partnerships.
Training Details
Insect populations are in serious decline globally. Pollinators are critical to our
food supplies yet very little has been done to support these species on a global
scale. Bees, butterflies and other winged insects will be discussed as well as the
challenges they face. The latest scientific research into bees and Ireland’s duty to protect wild bees will be discussed.

Marine Marvels: Seabirds, Seals, and Cetaceans

Facilitator: Daniel Moloney, Breeding Wader Advisory Officer with BirdWatch Ireland. Drawing on years of hands-on conservation work—from installing predator-proof fencing across Donegal to protecting vulnerable species like Lapwing, Dunlin, and Corncrake—Daniel brings expert knowledge and passion to our boat-based birdwatching adventure.

Inishowen’s coastline is home to a rich variety of habitats that support both local and migratory species. This unique training course, led by Daniel Maloney of BirdWatch Ireland, begins at Culdaff Bay and explores the in-shore waters around Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point.
Participants will learn how to identify key seabird species, distinguish between the main types, and understand their behaviours and habitat needs. The course also looks at the area’s significance for cetaceans such as dolphins and porpoises, as well as basking sharks, which frequent these waters during the summer months.
With Daniel’s expert guidance, this is an ideal opportunity to build field skills and gain a deeper understanding of our coastal biodiversity.
