ECO Carn – the community initiative in Carndonagh which aims to develop a biodiversity action plan for the town – has launched a new Wildflowers recording form to help capture records of wildflowers growing in the local area. During the Covid-19 restrictions, it has not been possible for the ecologist to do an audit of the spring wildflowers, and now the steering group are asking the community to help out by sending in records.
The Inishowen Rivers Trust are involved in developing the action plan for the town which will look at the whole area around Carn and its environs and will specifically look at 5 areas. These areas will be audited carefully and species lists developed. These lists will then be collated, the data returned the the NBDC and proposals will be developed to improve the area with dedicated action plans.
It’s an exciting project for the Trust to be involved with, which brings together so many community organisations and committed individuals. Over the coming months the Trust and their ecologist Aengus Kennedy will carry out the audits, but you can help too. If you see wildflowers while you are out and within your 2km radius, just log it on the form which you can download to your phone. You don’t even have to know what species it is! We will work that out from the photos you send us.
Get started today while the spring flowers are in full bloom!
