We had a very productive day on Sunday 15 Sep at our brash collection event. We were blessed with not just the sun but the number of volunteers who turned out. There wasn’t a branch left in the forest by the time we were finished.
Everyone was an expert at the end of the day with Trish Murphy, Carlene Lyttle and Sean Toland on hand to demonstrate how to make a brash bundles.
This brash will be used in river revetments, where we repair eroding bank by placing wooden stakes around the area and inserting the brash bundles as tightly as possible into the space between the stakes and the bank.
This stabilises the bank, by dissipates the power of the water, especially during floods and reduces the impact on the river bank. The picture to the right is a revetment being made along the cludaff river this year with brash gathered at previous brash collection event.
The brash also promotes the growth of vegetation which further stabilises the bank and enhances the habitat for wildlife.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped, including Mc Laughlin Coaches for transport and Corner Coffee for the amazing lunch.
Not forgetting our funders IFAN, IDP and Tusla, we could not continue the work without everyone’s support. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.
